The streets of the Greek capital are redolent of the history of the great classics of Western civilization. The modern urban atmosphere contrasts with the architecture of the ancient buildings of the Acropolis or the Agora.
A most classical city
Let’s start with the most stunning building: the Parthenon. At the foot of the Acropolis, the picturesque district of Plaka is the oldest in the city and the one that best preserves the charm of traditional Greece thanks to its lively, narrow streets. We recommend you visit any of the taverns to try a moussaka, olives or a Greek yoghurt. Very near the Acropolis is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which preserves 15 of the more than one hundred 17-metre-tall Corinthian columns that the building once had in the past. If you plan to visit Athens, don’t forget to climb Lycabettus Hill to enjoy the panoramic views of the city. We also recommend you wander around the Monastiraki district and discover its Turkish influences.
