The country became independent from Portugal in 1975, but its colonial past is still very apparent in Maputo. Maputo Fortress, built by the Portuguese, houses a small museum where you can learn more about the city's past. The Mesquita da Baixa is the oldest and largest mosque in Mozambique. It’s very near the Central Market, a place that you should not miss if you plan to visit Maputo. You must try the peanuts! Feima Feria is a handicrafts fair which is a great place to learn about local crafts. The Museum of Natural History is home to a large collection of insects. The beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is located in the Plaza de la Independencia. The unusual structure of the Casa de Ferro make it one of the most iconic places in the city.
