Located in a unique setting in the interior of Portugal, this beautiful area is the gateway to the highest point in the country, the Serra da Estrela. The Puente de la Carpinteira is the most stunning and iconic work of engineering in the city.
Land of wool and cheese
Before starting our tour of Covilha, we should get an energy boost by eating the most popular product in the area: cheese. In the modern Cheese Museum you can learn more about the flavours and its traditional production process. In the Wool Museum you can learn about the role that the textile industry has played in this Portuguese region. Another place to visit in Covilha is the Garden of the Lake, the green heart of the city, with a large lake where you can have a swim or take a relaxing boat ride. If you take the Santo André Elevator you will be able to see beautiful panoramic views of the city, whose buildings include the Church of Mercy founded in 1641, or the 16th-century Church of Santa Maria with beautiful tiles covering its façade.
