The castle that gives it its name to this city in the interior of Portugal is a symbol of a city that dates back to the Bronze Age! The remains of the old medieval fortress still survive.
Tradition and embroidery
The Templars built this fortress city within walls which were guarded over by watchtowers in the Middle Ages. If you plan to visit Castelo Branco, you should not miss going up to the Sao Gens viewpoint to enjoy the spectacular views of the city. With Baroque and Rococo features, the cathedral has a medieval layout, and together with the remains of the old castle, is one of the most visited attractions in the city. Another beautiful place to see in Castelo Branco is the old Episcopal Palace, with spectacular gardens, lakes and waterfalls. The Episcopal Palace also houses the Francisco Tavares Museum, featuring embroidered linen bedspreads in different colours, the most traditional craft in the area.
