The history of this Italian port city is closely linked to maritime trade. So it’s no surprise that the Museum of the Sea and one of the largest aquariums in Europe are among its biggest attractions. A perfect place to visit with the family!
The splendour of a great commercial past
The Via Garibaldi surrounds the old town and is one of the most beautiful Baroque streets in all of Italy. For years it was the place where the richest merchant families in the city competed to see who could build the most luxurious and elegant palace. Visitors can now enjoy majestic marble and stucco façades and large gardens with sculptures and fountains. Palazzo Rosso is the most popular palace due to the striking red colour of its façade. Also of note are the Palazzo Bianco, the Palazzo Doria-Tursi and the Palazzo Reale, the former residence of the Savoy dynasty. Many of these old palaces have now been converted into museums. One of the experiences you must not miss in Genoa is spending some time in any of the lively squares in the city enjoying some focaccia and delicious pesto sauce.
